Grant B. Smaldone

Grant Smaldone is a former prosecutor with years of experience trying criminal cases. His law practice is based in Charleston, S.C., where he focuses on criminal defense in state and federal court.

Education

A native of Myrtle Beach, SC, Grant attended the University of South Carolina, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He then attended the Charleston School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor degree. Grant clerked for a family law and personal injury firm in Charleston, SC while in law school.

Former SC Public Defender

Grant’s first job as an attorney was at the Third Circuit Public Defender’s Office in Sumter, SC. At the PD office, Grant immersed himself in learning South Carolina criminal law and tried as many cases as he could. His caseload ranged from simple magistrate court cases to murder prosecutions.

Grant won many victories for his clients in Sumter County, including not guilty jury verdicts on charges of attempted murder and criminal sexual conduct.

Former SC Prosecutor

After leaving the public defender’s office, Grant went on to get experience on both sides of the criminal law by becoming a prosecutor.

Grant worked at the Seventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office in Spartanburg, SC, where he prosecuted a variety of felony and misdemeanor offenses ranging from check fraud to burglary.

During his time as a prosecutor, Grant was known as a hard-working but fair representative of the state’s case, who was always honest and cordial when dealing with opposing counsel.

Professional Associations

Grant is a member of the South Carolina Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (SCACDL), the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), the Charleston Lawyers Club, and the South Carolina Bar Association.

He is also an adjunct professor of law at the Charleston School of Law, where he teaches Legal Research and Writing.
